Diesel Engine Settlement InformationThe Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency announced Oct. 22, 1998 a settlement with seven major manufacturers of diesel engines to resolve claims they installed illegal computer software on heavy duty diesel engines that turned off the engine emission control system during highway driving. In addition to civil penalties, the settlement advances the introduction of new low NOx engines and establishes more rigorous emission certification procedures for new engines. The settlement also requires the installation of low NOx kits during engine rebuild, injunctive relief projects to offset NOx emissions and an in-use emissions test program.
