ENERGY STAR Program Promotes Energy-Efficiency

ENERGY STAR was introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

EPA partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy in 1996 to promote the ENERGY STAR label, with each agency taking responsibility for particular product categories. ENERGY STAR has expanded to cover new homes, most of the buildings sector, residential heating and cooling equipment, major appliances, office equipment, lighting, consumer electronics and more product areas.

The ENERGY STAR program benefits businesses by:

  • Helping establish an energy performance target for new building designs;

  • Providing a benchmarking tool for buildings that compares energy costs to those of similar buildings;

  • Helping to identify products with the ENERGY STAR label;

  • Earning the ENERGY STAR label for your building, saving you money and increasing your bottom line.

For more information, visit the ENERGY STAR Web site.
