General Bibliography Transportation Team

1992

Guides to Pollution Prevention: The Mechanical Equipment Repair Industry. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development. September 1992. EPA/625/R-92/008.

This guide provides an overview of mechanical equipment repair processes that generate waste and presents options for minimizing waste generation through source reduction and recycling. It also provides worksheets for carrying out waste minimization assessments for mechanical equipment repair shops. Appendices contain case studies and information contacts.

1993

A Primer for Financial Analysis of Pollution Prevention Projects. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development. April 1993. EPA/600/R-93/059.

This document, produced by the American Institute for Pollution Prevention, is a guide to pollution prevention investment. It contains important information on basic analytical techniques needed to justify pollution prevention investments, concentrating on weighing economic and financial aspects of various project options instead of the technical factors. The appendices provide important resources to find further data and connections.

1994

Federal Facility Pollution Prevention: Tools for Compliance. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development. September 1994. EPA/600/R-94/154.

This document is intended as a guide for Federal facility managers in the use of pollution prevention tools to reduce their waste generation and emission or release rates in order to meet compliance objectives. The document includes valuable information pertaining to pollution prevention opportunity assessments, training and outreach, energy conservation and efficiency, cost/benefit analysis, life-cycle costing, total cost assessment, life-cycle analysis, and pollution prevention program planning.

Guide To Cleaner Technologies: Alternatives to Chlorinated Solvents for Cleaning and Degreasing. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development. February 1994. EPA/625/R-93/016.

This guide summarizes information on alternatives to chlorinated cleaning solvents and degreasers collected from US EPA programs, peer-reviewed journals, industry reports, vendor data, and other sources. The cleaner technologies are categorized as commercially available or emerging. For each technology, the guide addresses its pollution prevention benefits, operating features, application, and limitations.

Guide to Cleaner Technologies: Alternative Metal Finishes. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development. September 1994. EPA/625/R-94/007.

This guide describes cleaner technologies that can enable plant process and system design engineers to evaluate cleaner technology options for existing plants and proposed new metal finishing operations. The document reviews new technologies for their environmental impact in reducing waste emissions and provides resources for obtaining more detailed engineering and economic information about these new technologies.

Guide to Cleaner Technologies: Cleaning and Degreasing Process Changes. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development. February 1994. EPA/625/R-93/017.

This guide summarizes information on cleaning and degreasing process changes collected from US EPA programs, peer-reviewed journals, industry reports, vendor data, and other sources. The cleaner technologies are categorized as commercially available or emerging. For each technology, the guide addresses its pollution prevention benefits, operating features, application, and limitations.

Guide to Cleaner Technologies: Organic Coating Replacements. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development. September 1994. EPA/625/R-94/006.

This documents describes new, cleaner technologies that can be used to reduce emissions and wastes from organic paints and coatings application. The guide discusses not only the new technologies and their effects, but discusses the issue of organic coating pollution in industry, resources to improve environmental efficiency, and financial and technical sources to upgrade poorly run operations.

Project Summary: Onsite Solvent Recovery. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development. March 1994. EPA/600/SR-94/026.

The document is a summary of an onsite solvent recovery research project and it results. This study evaluated the product quality, waste reduction/pollution prevention, and economic aspects of three technologies for onsite solvent recovery: atmospheric batch distillation, vacuum heat-pump distillation, and low-emission vapor degreasing. The chemicals underwent physical and chemical tests to see if the quality of the solvent was acceptable for use in specific applications.

1995

Demonstration of Alternative Cleaning Systems. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development. August 1995. EPA/600/R-95/120.

This report represents the first demonstration of cleaner technologies to support the goals of EPA’s 33/50 Program. It focuses on substitutes for solvent degreasing processes that eliminate the use of chlorinated organic chemicals in the automotive parts industry. The document discusses the following substitute technologies: 1) aqueous wash system, 2) a no-clean technology, and 3) a hot water wash system. Technical, environmental, and economic evaluations were performed and each method was evaluated thoroughly for its environmental impact. Appendices include key contact information as well as useful information resources.
